A pill to help those suffering with coeliac disease gets ever closer…

It was reported yesterday by the Herald Sun, Australia, that after successful trials in Melbourne, anyone suffering from gluten-related side effects, (including those with coeliac disease), now have access to a pre-meal tablet to protect again said side effects! How exciting. First the portable gluten sensor – now this! I can barely contain my excitement.

Apparently, the tablet contains an enzyme from the papaya fruit! Mind blown. This pre-meal tablet is aimed at those who aren’t quite sure about the quality of the food they’re going to eat – isn’t that all the time for a coeliac?? I feel like I never know what I’m eating in restaurants! The article I read also states it could be used by those who are actually following a gluten-free diet but still get continuing symptoms.

So far, three clinical trials which have tested the enzyme in coeliac patients have been carried out. The article stated:

“The trial showed the tablet could protect against damage to the gut lining in coeliac patients who digested gluten, and it could improve chronic skin conditions which are a common side effect of the inflammatory disease.”

Even though this is in Australia, if this is successful, imagine how many coeliacs or gluten-sensitive people’s lives this could improve the world over? Even though I would be so excited to try it, I think I’d find it difficult to actually eat any food with gluten in just in case it caused me a world of pain… are you excited??

Interesting article – I certainly hope this kind of thing is developed and available world wide as soon as possible.

Have you heard about the Nima Sensor, that detects gluten in food? Sounds amazing!
